I never thought about that! Does air get trapped in cold water pipes? Air in hot water pipes obviously expands, and becomes a problem. In cold water I would have thought it would find its way out and not be a problem for long. But what do I know! As a plumber, I make one hell of an electrician! Is there a plumber in the house?

You cannot have air trapped in a cold water pipe if the water comes from a cold water main . You most probably have air in the cold pipe from your storage tank that feeds your copper cylinder for hot water. First of all, check that there is cold water getting into to the storage tank. If there is and you have a good level of water, then the best way to get the air out of this pipe, is to try to connect aflexible pipe to your cold tap and the other end of the hose pipe to the hot tap.then open the cold tap and the hot tap and let the cold water shoot up the hot tap and blow the air out into the storage tank..

in your cold water, it is easiest to just turn on all the taps until the air is expelled. this wastes water, but if you realy can not put up with the problem then just go around your home and turn every water tap on until the problem is solved. as it may be the hot water pipes that have air trapped and not the cold, remember the cold feeds your hot water tank, so bleeding the hotwater system should help. but this problem should sort it self out over time if you leave it long enough and use all the taps in your home. failing all else call a licenced plumber for advice.
in a hot water Central heating system your radiators have what are known as "bleed Valves" you need a key from a DIY or hardware store if you do not have one. then you simply look up the correct method of bleeding your system on the internet.
remeber though to have a few old towels or other material to mop up any water spills.
I hope that helps a little.

how do you know there is air in the pipes??? opening the cold taps fully should force any air out. do you have direct from mains or indirect from cistern for cold water??
noisey pipes is what people normally assume is air in the system, but this can be due to insufficient pipe clips. when a pipe vibrates it makes noise.
normally cold water is under such pressure air is drawn to the taps

turn on the water and let it run...if it IS air, believe me, you'll hear it when it's released....if it's not air, you need to call a plumber and here in the States they charge about $65.00 per hour....
