A genre is like a subcategory. Mystery, romance, suspense, science fiction, western, and horror are all genres. Within those genres are more genres. For instance, within romance there are bodice rippers (lusty pirates and such), paranormal (that dapper ghost who's courting you), chick lit (modern single gal seeks love), historical (set in the regency period), inspirational (no dirty parts), etc.
What genres have in common are certain plot devices or tropes. If you are reading a Gothic romance, for instance, chances are good that it will include inherited curses, a haunted mansion, a tyrant, and a madwoman or two.
Hope that was helpful!
