I think its a great idea! You are of an age when you are going further from home, and maybe returning later at night. Its good to have a phone with you in case of delays, change of plans, or just general use. If its prepaid, well even better.

So long as you keep it switched on, and not on silent! lol

It depends on the child.

Here's an article I found while researching your question:

IDC Research show that kids ages 10 to 14 are the fastest-growing segment of the population getting cell phones. In the summer of 2005, 5.8 million children had cell phones, and IDC Research expects that number to grow by 22% over 2006. Even younger kids are carrying phones -- 400,000 five- to ten-year olds have cell phones, according to IDC -- and the growth in that age group is equally big.

Whether your particular child is ready for or needs a cell phone, however, depends on several factors. If your kid has legitimate reasons to call you or another caretaker and has demonstrated the maturity and responsibility not to lose or abuse a cell phone, it might be both convenient and reassuring to give them their own phone.

The first question parents should ask themselves is "Does my child often lose things at school, like lunchboxes, mittens, and sweaters?" If the answer is yes, chances are that your kid isn't ready for the responsibility of his or her own phone.

On the other hand, there are many significant reasons you might want to purchase cell phones for everyone in the family. Do your children participate in a lot of after-school activities? Getting a cell phone for your children could be convenient for both you and them if practice times and carpools fluctuate and they need to get a hold of you for a ride.

Don't get your child a phone just because he or she wants one; but do consider if it might be beneficial to both of you if were you able to reach each other whenever you needed to.

I think it depends on the child. If they are mature and will only use it when they really need it then yes it is fine.
My niece just turned 15 and has a cell phone and is very responsible. My bother in law freaked when she received it as a Christmas gift, but he calls to check up on her all of the time now.
