decide whether the ordered pair is a solution of the system of linear equations:
x-7y=3
-5x+y=19 (-4,-1)

x - 7y = 3
-5x + y = 19
(-4, -1)
In order to tell whether or not this a solution to both lines you need to check it in both lines. Substitute both the x and y values into each line to see if the right side will equal the left side. If both sides are equal then it is a solution. If the sides are not equal then it isn't a solution.
x - 7y = 3, (-4, -1)
Substitute both values
-4 -7(-1) = 3
Multiply (watch the signs)
-4 + 7 = 3
Add.
3 =3, so (-4, -1) is a solution for this line.
-5x + y = 19, ( -4, -1)
Substitute.
-5(-4) + (-1) = 19
Multiply (signs!)
20 - 1 = 19
Subtract
19 = 19.
The point is a solution for both lines.

Lets start with this: 4+4 = 8, 4-4=0, 4*4 = 16, 4/4 = 1
