If you could know exactly how Earth, and later, humanity, came to be, and why; would you not be free? Einstein also looked to answer this elusive question. The answer is knowledge. The more you have, the freer you become. Jesus Christ said: "the truth shall set you free. " What is the truth you ask? Look -the history of humanity is so distorted and confusing ; how can anyone know the truth? To unlock the mysteries that plague humanity is a daunting task, all I can do at this time is to say that there is a solution. I am free because I know why. For example; I know how young Earth is in relationship to other worlds. We are one of millions of inhabited worlds. How do I know? For me its easy, however, if you want to know, you must study Earth's history from all perspectives, i.e. Archeology, Ethnology, Cosmology, Biology, and so on. well- I guess freedom does come with a price, work! Good luck. I hope this wets your appetite.

There are many different doors, and not one of them will have a sign on it saying 'this is the way too freedom'. Be brave and just keep unlocking all those other doors (even some that you may not want to open) The greatest light may well reside behind the darkest door.

It's starts mentally. If you don't even feel free in your mind, then you pay too much attention to society's "standards". You are already free if you are not in prison (mentally). Let go of all insecurities and self doubts, and put your life into your hands. Some don't want to work 9-5's, then start a business, or find other sources of income. Travel the world. Pursue your dreams without giving up. That is freedom.

In it purest form freedom can spell out death wish, so be warned right at the outset! Crowbars and all other hard tools are most definitely not the answer, as freedom is an illusion, and the hardest one to catch. This subtle illusion gets even more illusive when one tries to grab hold of it as if it were something singular, material and solid - something that can be acquire unconditionally and then kept at will.

The fact is that freedom like beauty, truth and justice manifests itself only through forms of existence; all these things are in a way ethereal, incomprehensible and subtle until they are realised into life through things, actions and thoughts. What do you know, for example, is beauty until you see a flower or any other expression of beauty; and what is justice, until you see order, balance and harmony in things of a situation or that of a place. Freedom in the same way has no form of its own; freedom of a things is not in its ability to act or exist absolutely freely, independently and irreverently; freedom of something is in its being in form that is most natural to it in a given environment or a surroundings.

Human concept of freedom is in observation of moral and ethical principles, laws of the land and in assuming due responsibilities at various levels. Just the way physical ailment takes away freedom of mobility for example, mental ailments can cause imitativeness in the mind: quilt, resentments, regrets, inhibitions and memories all influence our personal sense of freedom. A society, or a nation cannot be free until it learns to defend it self, until it is responsible for its existence or is able to maintain its state of free existence; under no circumstances a nation, or anything for that matter, can be absolutely free in existence.

The One Everpresent Creator gives it to you with love. The government under the pretense of giving you more, takes it away. Stay within the law and the governments good graces but know its corruption and don't worship it--leave all that to your Creator--follow those commandments and you will more freedom than you can have any other way, now and forever.

It is our attachments which keep us in chains, according to Buddhism. Letting go of attachments gives freedom.

Your Q is one which has tested philosophers from the dawn of history. Even the meaning of the word 'freedom' is much argued.

I quite like the Buddhist answer but then, I would. I'm a Buddhist.

I like your posting.

If you were completely free there would be nothing in life to aim for, as everything would be achieveable wiithin seconds. Personally I think true freedom would strip the pleasure from life.

First you need to distinguish freedom from liberty ,freedom is physical liberty is spiritual .physically you can never be totally free ,abandon this ambition as quickly as possible, you can and should strive for liberty
you can achieve it by liberating your heart from hatred liberating your head from worrying and hesitation, and by adopting a way of life which truely leads to spiritual growth. Remember this :LIBERATION LEADS TO LIBERATION
