My husband and I have found out we are having a boy. We chose to name the baby after him and call him by his middle name. Which will be Zean. And yes that is how we are going to spell it. It is a family name on my husband's side of the family. The baby will be named after my husband anyway.
The problem is none of our friends like the spelling. They say we should spell it the way everyone else spells it. But this spelling is unique to my husband's family and we want to honor them.
Should we change it just to please our friends or should we do what we wish? Personally I don't see anything wrong with it. It will pronounced Shawn.

Your baby!! You choose! Family names don't require approval! A friend of mine named her son Kylie, even though it is more often used as a girl name these days, because it is his grandfather's name. I picked Keagen for my first son and it was "frowned" upon by my family at first, now they can't imagine him being "anybody" else! :-) Good luck!

Zean is a nice name but your son is the one who is going to have to go through his life correcting people on how to spell it. In Ireland it is spelled Sean. I always have to correct people on the spelling of my name they spell it Kathy instead of Cathy buut as people get to know him they will realise that it is spelled Zean. Keep with tradition if that is the way you want to spell it! At the end of the day it is Zean that has to live with the name and not you or your friends! You have a unique child so why not give him a unique name!

Congratulations and I hope all goes well for you!

My mother named me Rachele, after her own middle name. It is pronounced like Rachelle, yet all through school and my job, I had to correct people when they called me Rachel. It really doesnt bother me much. I even gave Rachele to my daughter as a middle name to pass it on. "Zean" is definetly a unique one, since in the english language the letter Z NEVER makes the S sound. In the end, its up to you, and if you are ok with your child constantly having to correct people. Honeslty, you would still be honoring them if you changed the spelling because it would still be the same name, but do what you feel is right in your hearts. People told me that Brooklyn was a stupid thing to name my daughter, but now we always get complimented on it.

Hey, its your kid, name him what you want. Other people's opinions on the subject are completely irrelevant. It's a family name, and if they don't get it, then they don't have to call him by it. There are much stranger names out there, so screw pleasing your friends. They should be pleased enough with the fact that you are having a baby. What kind of friends are they to question your name choice?

My only problem with Z names, is if he gets lined up alphabetically by first name in like preschool, he'll always have to be last. Although that might teach patience, they could run out of ice cream.

Spell it how you want. It seems like whatever name you choose and whatever spelling you choose-someone isn't going to like it. This is your son and you should honor your family like you want to!

Honor your family history. Your friends will get over it. How dare they criticize you in the first place!

Did you mean Sean? I don't see how Zean could be Shawn...but it's your baby and your decision. I kinda like Zean.
