None of the tasks that you listed are particularly processor-intensive. You would probably not benefit noticeably from a dual core processor.

Dual core necessity aside, a lower ghz Core 2 Duo will outperform a Pentium D. But for what you do with the computer, you really don't need either. Just get a Celeron D, and you should be fine. The second core isn't EVER used unless a programme is specified to use it. For instance, video editing software and SPECIFIC videogames use that second core. Most of the time you will also need XP Professional to even make use of those programmes. Home edition (with exceptions) ignores the second core. I personally don't know about the Duo.

None of the things you have listed requires a dual core CPU, but I still think they are worth the money. Duel core processors are superior for feeding the higher end graphics cards boot times are much faster as well as launching any programs. More and more of the newer programs can utilize the dual core CPUs and we are starting to see progams that benifit from the quad core CPUs that are out.
I've got an Intel E6700 and it's great. Yes it cost more but the overall computing expericne is far better and I can confidently run any desktop software there is.
Good luck.

dual core is good for people that want to do more operations at the same time. example you are using yahoo meeting on web cam, working on your pictures, downloading music and serving Internet and you want all the run smoothly at the same time. the dual can help you out wit this so you can easily use all the programs at ones. if you run the stuff at the time or less you will be fine plus they have a new chip that's better now they named it core dual don't no why they turned the name around

Dunno, but if you have kids or a partner that likes to download music, or watch videos etc on the net, then I'd advise it. They aren't that much more expensive!
