I've tested the headset and mic on my notebook and all is well. But on the desktop after plugging both in and testing using Sound Recorder, I don't get anything into the computer from the microphone.

Your computer may not be set to record from Microphone.

Try going into your Volume control, Click on Options --> Properties...then select Recording...make sure that Microphone is checked, then hit ok...(you will notice that you are now in recording control....Once you are in recording control...check to make sure that microphone is selected once again and the the slider bar is up.

Check sounds recorder again.

Are you using a USB headset? If so, you may need to alter the settings for the driver. Open Device Manager, open "Sound, video and game controllers", click on USB Audio Device and then select Action->Properties. Then select the Properties tab, select USB Audio Device and click the Properties button. Ensure that you have 'Use audio features on this device' checked. Depending on your device, you may have other properties to check, such as microphone level.

On your desktop you might have to go to the control panel on the start menu under settings. Then click "Sound, Speech and Audio devices". Then click sounds and audio devices. Under voice there should be voice recording click the test hardware button.

Make sure you have the mic plugged into the line in port and not the line out port.
