I am about to get two Oscars and would like to get a male and female so I could breed them. I just have on problem....... I DON'T KNOW HOW TO TELL A GUY FROM A GIRL!!! Pretty big problem I know. Is there any way to tell or do I just buy to and hope that they are of different genders??? I would need to be able to tell in the pet store, would they know??? Thanks. Oh and also will they breed with just any other Oscar or do they have to "fall in love" Thank you.

Hi I have 4 oscars, and when we bought them we didnt intend to breed them - they have actually laid 6 lots of eggs!!!

sexing any fish is difficult, but ocsars seem harder. I have attched a website that might help you, and it also gives other info on breeding etc.

without wanting to put you off, it is hard to breed oscars. Mine, like i have said, have laid 6 lots of eggs. The first 4 lots they ate themselves! After that, my husband set up another tank with the bubbles etc and we collected the eggs and put them in the other tank. They hatched and lived 2 days (until my daughter fed them an ice lolly!!!) The last lot, we did the same for - moved them to another tank, and this time they lived for 8 days and died. Still dont know why. We are now waiting for another lot of eggs to try again. They are beautiful fish and breed quite often so it would be great to see such a tiny fry grow into such a lovely fish.

Good luck with the breeding. The website to visit is http://www.aquatic-hobbyist.com/profiles/freshwater/cichlids/oscar.html

The only reliable method of determining the gender of an Oscar, is by netting them out of the tank, and holding them still while examining their genital area with a bright light available. It does take some practice to tell the difference, but the male's spawning tube points back towards the tail, and is located just in front of the opening of the anus. The female on the other hand, has a spawning tube that is less pointed, and points straight down. The female's genital area gives the impression of two openings including the anus.
