256 is really the bare minimum for XP to run somewhat efficiently. I usually recommend 512 if you don't have a lot of cash to waste. Memory is a place for your computer to temporarily store information, it's much faster than your hard drive. And the hard drive is what it switches to ("virtual memory") when you run out of the faster RAM. Adding RAM to prevent virtual memory from kicking in is useful in situations where you're wanting to run a lot of programmes at the same time. If you plan on using memory intensive programmes like audio and video editing, Photoshop, or videogames, you may want more than 512.

Yes, very much slow.
Adding more RAM allows you to open programs faster, and more programs at a time.
I personally have 2 gigs of ram in my 2.0ghz machine, running ATI Radeon 1600 video card.

Yes,
And in comparison with Windows XP, that is just twice the Minimum requirement.
I would not run anything with less than 512mb of ram for a windows xp machine.

yup, 256MB ram is 4 times smaller than a 1GB Ram, 1GB = (1024MB). Having a 1GB ram will significantly improve your computers computing powers! :)
