Today Wisconsin's governer has proposed a state wide smoking band that would include taverns and restaurants. Me and my brother have been debating this. We both aren't smokers. To me I'd like it because I have sinus problems and the smoke kills me when I out. Not to mention the smell from other's habit. He claims that there is no real proof that second hand smoke is harmful. And is concerned about losing a civil liberty. What are your thoughts and opinion?

i'm against the smoking bans... here in california there is one, and it extends to beaches and whatnot, really because of littering, because the smoke is not really bothering people in the open like that. it's ridiculous. last year a senator here was proposing that it be illegal to smoke in your car with a kid under 7... wtf??? how are officers supposed to know how old a kid is when they're all going down the highway at 65 mph?

To the people who are saying there is no proof that second-hand smoke is harmful should do a bit more research. There is definitely proof that it is harmful and has been proven through many studies that have been conducted through impartial research.

It is a smokers civil liberty to smoke but where you can smoke comes into question when you are taking away non-smokers civil liberty to enjoy a beer in a smoke-free environment.

The fact of the matter is that the tobacco industry is multi-billion dollar industry and will pay whatever they can to cast doubt to keep smokers smoking.

A side note: There have been numerous cases recorded of non-smokers dying from emphysema and lung cancer due to second-hand smoke. Autopsies have shown that these peoples lungs resembled that of a smoker but they never actually put a cigarette to their mouth.

The truth is out there, it just depends on whether you are looking for it or not.

The American Surgeon General has stated there is a CLEAR link between second hand smoke and illness - cancer, emphasima etc. He went on to say there is NO safe level of second hand smoke - see the link below for the full text.

The issue is generally not 'should bar owners be allowed to make this choice' but rather 'should the state seek to enforce safe working practices for all employees'. The fact is, if you are a non-smoker and work in a bar or restaurant, you could be putting your health at risk.

I have also seen no proof. I'm open minded enough to believe it could be harmful, but the fact is, nobody has every died from second hand smoke.

As for the ban, I am against it. It should be the right of the establishment owners to decide if they want their place to be smoking on non-smoking; not the public's opinion.

I always vote down the extra tax that you simple minded yahoos vote in. Don't you see what you are doing? You are letting the government dictate the price of something because they say it's bad. If it's that bad, it would be illegal. What happens when we start taxing stuff you like? How about soda? Nevada is already working on it. I can't wait until we start taxing churches, water, air and milk. Maybe then the short sighted will see what they started.

""I like it....enforce it, your brother is WRONG there is proof that second hand smoke kills....where has he been hidinh under a rock? ""

Where exactly is this proof? Last I heard there was NO proof as far as second hand smoke goes however there is proof that automobiles, airplanes, some factorys, etc. are polluting our air and making it unsafe (especialy in Texas). If your "proof" comes from a anti-smoking group then it's just more BS.
