I need to write an essay on any subject....what exactly is an essay, and what should I include in it? It can be on any subject, but can an essay include political/opinionated subjects? How closely related is it to a report?

Thanks,

An essay consists of three basic parts. First you have a concise and to the point opening statement that poses a question, hypothesis, or thought (at this point, do not include any detail to back up what you are saying). Next, you have the body of the essay which includes your detail to justify your thoughts, question, or hypothesis that you are trying to present as a viable argument or statement. Finally, you have a paragraph where you make a conclusion based on the analysis of the details that you have presented (in other words, sort of an answer to the opening statement). An essay is a report of sorts, but expands the report by presenting a conclusive argument or answer to a thought provoking question. I hope this helps.

ThinkQuest defines an essay as "a piece of prose writing, usually short, that deals with a subject in a limited way and expresses a particular point of view." But many other definitions include "personal." An essay usually includes your opinion, especially when you are told to choose your own topic. An essay is usually a short piece, but it should be somewhat convincing, especially if you are stating your own opinion. If, for example, you write on a political view that you uphold, then by all means use your personal biases. But BE SURE TO BACK THEM UP! No essay is a good essay that does not support it's purpose. Be sure your essay is unified (no contradictions) and flowing, pleasing to the ear and the reader. Include a brief summary of your topic, what you believe is correct/incorrect (based on the instructions given you, you may choose to withhold personal pronouns such as "I," "me," and "mine."), and then support it strongly. I hope this was helpful.
