Past Tense words are usually verbs as tense is related to time. Past, present, and future are the three parts of tense as well. So, past tense is about something that already happened and you are writing about it. "I went to school." is an example. "Will go" is future. Where it gets tough is when you use a "helping verb" such as have, had, will, such as "I have gone to three different colleges." Libraries are full of "handbooks" and they are only $12 to $15 most book stores, or on-line.
