good question,it all depends on the p.c you are using,if like me you have 1.5gb of ram my p.c is up and ready to go in 20 seconds,this is also down to the way i keep my p.c free of nasties like spyware and viruses which will dramatically slow down your start up times
but mainly its your ram that determines the speed of your start up,the more memory you have then the quicker all the start up processes can finish and you can get on with the work in hand
a quick way to increase your start up times is by going to the microsoft system configuration utility(go to run and type msconfig) then press the start up tab,then deselect any programs you dont want to use at start up,remember to apply then press ok,then a reboot will be required
memory is one of the cheapest upgrades you can do but in my opinion it makes all the difference
xp works great with anything over 1gb,which makes me think why some companys still ship systems with 256mb ram

it all depends on your processor and how much you have on your start menu mine takes 1 minute but my old desk top takes 3 Minuit's but it holds 10 times more
