They used to do it so that they'd sound more glamourous. did you know marilyn monroe's name was really norma jean? i guess that sounds pretty plain jane. sometimes the studios to which they're contracted would make them change their names. With the power of celebrity these days, i guess actors have more clout about their names. But some of them still change their names, especially if they sound dorky like tom cruise was Thomas Cruise Mapother 3 or 4. and jennifer aniston's last name is shortened from her original greek name, which might not be as easily pronounced.

In the old days of Hollywood the studios were ran by the moguls, such as Louis B. Mayer, that controlled every aspect of an actor's life. The studio heads chose marketable names over some plain name that didn't draw Star Power.

Some still do. Ficticious names are a way to avoid stalkers and fans coming to celebrities' houses. How annoying would it be if you had a hundred plus strangers showing up at your house every day?

John Cougar. Now John Mellencamp.
when he was signed they (record label) said no one would buy a CD from some guy named 'mellencamp'. After a few albums, which sold very well, he put his foot down. He said he was John Mellencamp and if people really liked his music (he's a singer/songwriter) they'd buy it with his real name.
he was right

Think back in the days, alot of them had boring names. Like marilyn Monroe (Norman jean Barker) doesnt sound to sexy.
Cary Grant ( Archiebald Leach) ummmmm and Demi Moore's wasnt so hot, that why they use to change them. Now days i guess it doesnt matter.

Alot of old actors & actresses had long difficult to say and spell
last names. They were either shortened or changed to look
more recognizeable and american.
