Stem cell researchers reacted with enthusiasm and reservations to a report that scientists have found stem cells in amniotic fluid, a discovery that would allow them to sidestep the controversy over destroying embryos for research. Researchers at Wake Forest University and Harvard University reported Sunday that the stem cells they drew from amniotic fluid donated by pregnant women hold much the same promise as embryonic stem cells.

Dr. George Daley, a Harvard University stem cell researcher, said the discovery shouldn't be used as a replacement for human embryonic stem cell research.
One of the more promising aspects of the research is that some of the DNA of the amnio stem cells contained Y chromosomes, which means the cells came from the babies rather than the pregnant moms.

Embryonic stem cell research has NOT brought forth any results so far. The scientist have said it is pretty much a bust. We are already funding Non embryonic stem cell research. The whole stem cell BS was just BS liberal crap to get the government to pay money to research firms that promote embryonic stem cell research thus justifying abortions.

Here is the reality, dead stem cells are useless. When they extract the stem cells from an embryo they are still alive, it wouldn't work if they were not. The embryos they want to use would all be thrown in the trash if they were not used for the research, then they would be killed.

Stem cell research is akin to organ transplants, extracting the live cells from one person to save the life of another person. No embryos are "killed" except the ones thrown into the trash.

It looks like it might if the article you posted is correct. I think stem cells are going to be the greatest medicinal discovery of genetic research, but we have to keep the super-conservatives happy. If there are stem cells in amnio fluid, that sounds like the best place to get them outside of a baby's cord blood, which is also a source of stem cells.

To date, embryonic stem cell research has produced absolutely nothing of medical benefit.

However, new techniques that cause almost any cell to revert to a stem cell has actual promise in a wide variety of medical problems and is producing results in animal studies. Basically, you do not need to transplant stem cells and quite frankly, that is unlikely to work anyway. Instead, you treat the effected area in such a way that causes some cells to revert to stem cells, which then differentiate. Realistically, the most needed/useful area for technology like this is damage to the nervous system. Most cells in the nervous system don't regenerate, which is why people tend to become paralyzed when it is injured. Adding stem cells to the area, does nothing. But, treating the area to cause the cells to revert to stem cells, causes them to replicate, close gaps and then redifferentiate back into nerve cells. This has proven successful in animal models and is likely the next big breakthrough in neuroscience.

Well, the choice is - use unwanted embryos from fertility clinics for research, or have them incinerated. The women who own those embryos will not have them implanted; it would be illegal to implant them into someone else, unless the woman gave her permission, which is unlikely - so... burn them, or use them for research - which is the better option?

We have already lost the scientific and research head start to other countries, we will be playing catchup and paying royalties to other countries who have been working on this all along. We will still be arguing evolution while the world laughs at us and cures its genetic patients.

Restrict it to the embryos that would be destroyed/discarded anyway. Plenty of perfectly good embryos are discarded simply because they were never used.
