When a person or persons makes slanderous comments in order to discredit a peace officer and get him/her fired (even though he/she did nothing wrong), what is the legal term, or what could the person get charged with?

Could start with criminal defamation. Or better yet, if they make a false affidavit when swearing out a complalint, it's a felony.
Some departments aggressivelyl pursue people for false reports, others don't seem to get too excited about it.
Personally, I had very few complaints but it always irritated me because they were unfounded and should've never been filed anyway.

Also, as an officer I have to agree with "To Go To Guy's" statement.

In my state it would be "Falsification of an Official Report" with also an additional "Defamation" if the officer is fired!

Sadly, it is not illegal to tell a lie, unless of course it is in a court proceeding and you are under oath.
