is it possible to make a toy car that could run from your computer, and not from a remote control? I think about a car that runs on the 802.11 networks (wifi).

Absolutely. Your best bet would be to base the control mechanism on a micro-computer (think Gumstix) which would have a Wi-Fi CF card and some sort of TTL (etc.) controller to allow you to interact with the car's steering and power mechanisms.

A few cell phone companies are staring to come out with a device that you can use to get wireless internet and convert that into a local wifi signal. However, it would be MUCH cheaper just to buy a GPU unit. They are generally very cheap. You can also take screen shots of the maps on your itouch...

802.11 is wireless, just the same as BlueTooth.
The only difference is the Power / distance and amount of information that travels through the wireless connection.
The more power, the more information and the more distance you will get out of wireless.
