In our current system, the violent criminals are treated as
"mentally competent." Mentally incompetent, delusional people
are chemically, often forcibly restrained as though they were
violent criminals.

Some of these mentally incompetent did not
commit any act of violence to deserve being lobotomized
slowly in this manner.

If a man makes the above statement to a psychiatrist, I think
a lot of things could happen.
I can only hope that the psychiatrist will take nothing into
consideration except one thing: make sure that no one
else is in danger because of this man.

There are times when a psychiatrist calls behaviour "insane" or mentally ill just because he doesn't like it.

A person should be allowed to call himself napoleon bonaparte
as long as he commits no violent crime.

At a minimum a court order for monitoring would be requested. A court representative would be assinged to check up on the patient at varius locations during the week / month.

Follow up visits for sure.

If the monitoring / follow up visits determine that the posibility of harm to the patient or others is imminent, the patient will be committed.

sorry to hear of this delusion, it is a very difficult scenerio. hope you and the family will be ok.

The psychiatrist may consult with other doctors or with psychiatric reference materials in order to be reminded of how to deal with any of the many, many, people who believe they are the messiah - and the world is full of people who believe that about themselves.

As long as the man isn't a threat to himself or others and isn't breaking laws, then most likely the pyschiatrist will write him a prescription for a strong psychotropic drug.

I guess it depends first of all on whether or not he actually believes it. Then it would depend on what he thinks that means exactly...

At least those are the two questions I would start off asking...
