I'll agree that cigarettes and alcohol are probably the most abused drugs due to their legality, but making them illegal will just make a lot more people into criminals. They tried that during prohibition.
You can also make a LOT of money in the drug trade, you just run the risk of getting thrown in jail if you get caught. You can also make a lot of money making your own alcohol (take a look at breweries and vineyards). Lots of tobacco shops sell home-grown tobacco. Sure, most probably won't get as rich as the big tobacco and alcohol companies, but they're way too established and too well branded to be surpassed. But there's still some lots of money to be made.
The government also makes a killing off of prosecuting people for minor illegal drug offenses and giant drug raids, lots more than they would if they legalized illegal drugs and taxed them. Not to mention all the money they make by putting the confiscated narcotics back out on the market... crazy cash!

The use of any drug is unnatural. I do believe that marijuana use can lead to the use of more harmful drugs. I also believe that marijuana is useful in some cases as a medication and its use should be prescribed by a doctor. The trouble seems to be that some people are addictive personalities. Some reach a level of being other than themselves with beer or marijuana but some need stronger drugs to get themselves lost in. It's a pity really that they can't face life as the person they are.

Pretty much anybody can grow tobacco or build a still-- have you not read ANY history? Prohibition does not work.
Tobacco and Alchohol have been around in the US since the inception of the colonies. Plus, there are tons of subsidies for tobacco (not sure about alcohol). And there's tons of lobbying power behind those industries.
You acutally think a weed, cocaine or other drug lobbyist exists or would even get anywhere? Get real.

It all has to do with politics. Know one knows how much money the politicians are receiving from these two industries, but it is in the billions, mostly from the southern part of the U.S. Now would you think that all those southern politicians are going to put an end to thier biggest donators? I think not. Neither are the states whom are reaping billions from the tax that is envolved. Without that tax, no roads, no schools, no nothing.

Governments make so much money off of alcohol and cigarettes that they would never make them illegal.
In Saskatchewan, alcohol is only sold in government run stores.
Talk about a price monopoly.
scary!

It has to do with the ability to tax. You can grow marijuana in your home, but you need specialized soil and large space for tobacco. You can hide marijuana from the government. So instead of taxing marijuana distribution or the consumers, they'd rather make it illegal so nobody's getting away with not paying taxes. Alcohol has been around for thousands of years, anybody can make it.
