When hiring someone, say you interviewed someone who seemed really good, was well qualified -- but tested positive for marijuana. Would you hire them anyway, or stick firmly to your policy?

This question is specifically about marijuana, not other drugs

Absolutely! I would discuss the test results with them, and let them know that we have a zero tolerance policy on the job. But what a person does in their free time is their business...as long as it doesn't interfere with how they perform on the job.

Good employees are too hard to find to start policing their personal lives!

Yes, I would, but sometimes even bosses who smoke themselves have no control over that. If you pop, you pop, and some workplaces just don't allow it.

If you are a boss trying to decide if you should hire someone, and it is up to you... then by far hire them. I've been surprised to find out the ammount of people that live normal lives, have excellent jobs, even own businesses and smoke pot.

Not only would be willing to overlook it but have actually overlooked it several times & have not been disappointed yet.

Drunks are another matter - too many missing days for frequent binge drinkers. Tobacco smokers are the worst - they have far more sick day usage than the other two groups in my personal experiance.

Yes i'd hire them. Marijuana is not that big of a deal.
