I have tried this method with carpet and it works like a charm.
Place the sweatshirt on an ironing board or other flat surface. Apply a white paper towel (no colored paper towels or patterns) on top. Apply an iron at medium heat to the affected area, and the wax should melt into the paper towel. Make sure to warm the whole area so the entire wax spot can lift off and adhere to the paper towel.
Good luck! This might also work with a thin linen or cotton towel or rag.

You turn the sweatshirt inside out and get wax paper and put in right on the wax on the other side and Iron the opposite side and it will come off onto the wax paper

turn the sweatshirt inside out with papertowels or a brown paper bag inside the shirt (where the wax is) and iron the back of where the wax spot is
The iron will heat up the wax causing it to turn to liquid and the papertowels or bag will soak up the wax. The only tricky part is if it was colored wax...you will have to use a stain remover on it to try to get the dye out.

Put the shirt in your freezer until the wax is frozen. Then just break the frozen wax off or peel the frozen was off of the fabric.
