That of dissent to a religious corruption.
He founded Lutheranism, which was the first public outcry against the Catholic Church. He disagreed with what the Catholics were doing with indulgences, quietly stated his point, and then the citizens of Wittenberg ran with his ideas and raised him as their spokesperson, so to speak.
he established the idea of justification by faith alone, if you're looking at it from a religious standpoint.

Luther was one of the first advocates of Protestant groups. Him, along with Calvin and others of his time went against the corrupt church (of the time).
The practice of indulgences (selling a piece of paper that would get you into heaven) and the selling of church offices to naboles or the highest bidder were among the things he criticized.
With Luther's criticisms the Catholic church, arguably the most influential force in Europe at the time, had to re-think its practices (THAT alone is a big legacy). But beyond that Luther inspired an entire following of religious dedication (which would also lead to the Anglican church founded by Henry VIII, which again, is a huge impact).
Luther changed the way the Catholic church operated, the way people thought about their religions, and the religious faiths of an entire nation (England) as well as many other individuals scattered across Europe.
in short, he changed religion..... big time

(Martin) Luther sparked the risings of Protestant churches all over Europe. His protests through his preaching and his Ninety-Five Theses were the first outcries against the Roman Catholic Church. He founded the Christian denomination, Lutheranism, which led to the development of other Protestant movements, such as Anabaptism, Episcopalianism, and eventually Presbyterianism.
Hope that helps!
God bless!
