i try to make one of them, but it wont let me save the changes. Help!

Where it says "Hellp (your name here) Click that and edit your profile. It'll ask you if you want to create an account where you choose what you want to show as an avatar.

It should automatically save the changes though. Maybe you're not signed in when you create your avatars. Log into your yahoo messenger or even your yahoo mail (but I prefer messenger) and click on your display image even though there's none. The should be some choices. Click on "Customize my Yahoo Avatar" and take it from there. The page'll explain everything. I don't quite know why it didn't save. Perhaps you weren't signed in. Good luck!:-)
