"what 'things' are left floating about after they flush the toilet - especially plastic covered items that don't flush away very easily and if they do they tend to block up the system"
what plastic things are you talking about?
Some facts for your information:
Used tampons or used sanitary towels? I tear my sanitary towels in half to make sure that they do flush away - even though this may cause the blood to leak out all over the floor and toilet seat. When torn in half they tend to flush better. In fact, he more saturated with blood the better they flush away.
With my tampons I simply flush these away. As these are filled with blood they go down the system okay.
Of course it would be better if sanitary towels and tampons were made of fibres which could disintergrate.
In fact, it would be better if the government put sanitary towels and tampons on prescriptions so that women could get these things free.

Sounds like you have issues! I ALWAYS check what I might be leaving behind in the toilet! However putting the toilet seat down is more hygenic as less escapes from the bowl during flushing.

You should know women by now mate - they're always right, so if they say the lid should stay down then the lid SHOULD STAY DOWN!!!!
What more logic do they need?
If you manage to find one who gives you a decent answer though - ask her why they have to squeeze the toothpaste tube from the middle - and why they always have to cover every available surface in the bedroom with make up and perfume bottles.

As a woman, I have no idea either - I always leave it up, as does my boyfriend. The only time I touch the toilet seat is to clean it - do women really nag their boyfriends about things like this?

The only time I'll ***** about it is at 4 o'clock in the morning when I'm half-asleep and can't see straight, sit down and get a wet butt! Have you ever fallen into a toilet in the middle of the night? I didn't think so so be considerate and put it down. Plus, girls use it down for both, guys use it down for one. Majority is to have it down.

because women are crazy. I don't understand why women don't check to see if the toilet seat is down. Its pretty selfish to assume the seat is down all the time if you live with a man and you know men stand up to pee. Men should stop touching the toilet seat all together when we pee and see if women like sitting on toilet seats drenched in urine. Because I'll be damned if i clean a toilet seat when i could just LET IT UP!!!!

I don't give a crap about the bloody toilet seat and never will thank you very much, I am smart enough to put it down myself when I need to use it, just like my husband is smart enough to put it up when he needs to use the toilet. All this toilet seat rubbish gives us sane women a bad name.

It's probably because we like things to look tidy and be germ free, I don't personally mind the seat being left up, as not all boys realize the potential mess that occurs if they leave it down, while using the loo!

The seat and the lid are two different things. We want the SEAT down so we don't accidently try to sit on the rim without the seat, and injure ourselves or fall into the bowl.
