I will always believe that Jimi Hendrix is the best. He wasn't just a great guitarist he also wrote some of the best lyrics as well.

Jimi was and to a degree still is the best years after his death.

Bear in mind he influenced most if not all of the rock guitarists out there and was 10 or so years ahead of his time.

You can clearly hear his 'style' in many modern day guitarists - Vai and Satch to name two.

In my honest opinion there is no great guitarist. Every guitarist rather famous or not has his or her own unique style. Cause every time a new guitarist comes along. In the shadows is one that is as good or better. I like hendrix and clapton and page. But to me there are no greatest guitarist

If your question is about those no longer living, Jimi Hendrix and Duane Allman are tied at the top of my list. From those among us today, Eric Clapton, who was influenced heavily by the gentlemen above shares the top spot with Ted Turner and Andy Powell, for lead and rhythm; Martin Turner at bass.

Duane Eddy. Too many people forget that Rock goes back a little further than the 70's or even 60's. Duane Eddy really revolutionized what it meant to be a rock guitarist.

I would agree it is a shame he died so young, he could have developed and progressed as an artist. There are also the likes of Marvin, Clapton, Harrison and Slash.
