My mother did not plan her future very well but I can't let my mother
wither away and die. She is living on my brother's military allotment and she has money in a joint account with me. She only get money from the joint account when she really need it.
I am willing to accept her as my dependant.
My mother is not disabled and does not have any current health problems. My brother do not want to have anything to do with her.

If your mom has an income of any kind and it's taxed, then, no, you can't. Otherwise if she truly is your dependant, I'd suggest checking the local tax laws.

Children over 18 can NOT be claimed unless they continue to attend school, so my GUESS is that you can't claim her.

Yes but she will need to either live with you for 6mo out of the year or you must be able to prove that you provide for her well being. Also she will not be able to file her taxes the same way - you will have to talk to a CPA about how she will need to file.

If you claim her as a dependent you have to be able to prove you provided at least 50 percent of her support. Can you do that?

If you provide most of her income and she does not pay you rent for living with you, yes.

She, on the otherhand, cannot claim herself as a dependant on her own tax return.

You can claim her as a dependent if you support her atleast 50% and you have records to back that up.

It doesn't sound like you'll be able to claim her, but check with a qualified tax preparer to be sure.

Yes. You can claim her IF she does NOT claim herself when/if she files her income tax (and if nobody else does, either).
