the first TcG was a Baseball game in the early 1900's
It made a set of 100 ards you could play a game of baseball with.
Roleplaying Games were also key,as the biggest TCG's are often fantasy based.
Then,yes,magic the gathering(origonaly known as mana clash in its early stages of beta-ness)was invented by Dr.Richard Garfield.
Then a bunch of card games come out riding MtG's tail.
