I dont know why other people would bother replying with answers that involve costs...

Here are two sites that all of my friends use and myself included, when we build free sites for whatever reason.

Geocities.com is part of yahoo
or
Freewebs.com
Both are free site building and hosting sites, altogether.

If you are serious about creating websites, don't go for free webhosting as they are not reliable and you may end up losing all your work. They usually put ads on your websites and it could be annoying.

If you intend to create more than 1 website, go for multiple web hosting where you could handle your websites in one account.

Visit Following webhosting which is quite good.

They offer hosting of "unlimited domains" and you will get massive webspace of 200000 MB (200 GB ). They only charge $4.95/month and they offer "a free Domain Name" and installing service called "Fantastico". By using Fantastico, you could create own forum, photo gallery, shopping cart (e-commerce),your own auction site and your own blogs within few seconds. They also offer "Free Website Builder" as well.

Visit the site to check details.

Domains
Following site is quite good to register domains as price is reasonable with free privacy. Some charge about $5/ year just for free privacy.

try this site godaddy.com

You'll have to say ok to their advertisements on your web site and pay about $7 for a domain name.

When it comes to hosting, you get what you pay for.
