I'm currently into indie and alternative rock but im bored of it and want to get into a new cooler genre. If you could tell me some good bands and how to get started, thanks!

Tool is very good if you consider them nu-metal. System of a Down is OK. As far as that genre goes, that's it. Punk? There are some great classic punk bands such as the Sex Pistols and classic(70's) Misfits. Avoid anything new. Soundgarden and Alice In Chains are both very good grunge bands. Check out a band called the Melvins. They where very influential to the grunge style. After you get done with all that run out and buy Slayer's Reign In Blood. It doesn't get any better. When you want to know about Real Metal not nu-metal ask again.

I suggest you don't get into it, but if you must...
Some good punk bands are...
The Adicts
The Ramones
TSOL
The Descendents

Some good nu metal bands are...
Demon Hunter
The 69 Eyes
Project 86

For grunge I would say some of the Breeder's stuff
Pearl Jam
Soundgarden
Alice in Chains

forget about nu-metal

grunge:
nirvana - nevermind
melvins - houdini
mudhoney - superfuzz bigmuff
pixies - trompe le monde
mad season - above
pearl jam - vs.
alice in chains - dirt
sonic youth - sister
temple of the dog - temple of the dog

punk:
husker du - zen arcade
the stooges - raw power
minor threat - complete discography
fugazi - repeater
misfits - walk among us
black flag - my war
dead kennedys - fresh fruit for rotting vegetables
stiff little fingers - inflammable material
minutemen - double nickels on the dime
nomeansno - wrong
flux of pink indians - the ******* cunts treat us like pricks
conflict - the unforgiveable force

if you want to listen to punk, don't start off with contrived rubbish like the sex pistols

You're presumably a lot younger than I am, but if you don't buy into the "It's crap if it's more than 10 minutes old" reasoning, you might like some of the genre's golden oldies so to speak: Dead Kennedys, Sex Pistols, Clash, X, and so forth.

dont get in to a new music scene just because its cooler! get into it if you like the sound of it. listen to real old punk starting obviously with the sex pistols, and grunge with nirvana and pearl jam and see if you like it.

original punk is top. sex pistols, the jam, the clash, the stranglers...all superb.
grunge is probably more nirvana and that sort, and nu-metal you want to be listening to slipknot, korn, linkin park ect. the cure are also brilliant (bit of a different genre, but well worth a listen!) xxx
