I think it is obvious from Bush's SOTU address that he's very worried about his legacy. His overatures to Democrats are impressive and pathetic all at the same time. If only he could have sounded this level headed 5 years ago when it might have mattered. Instead he rammed dozens of ultra-conservative bills through congress and signed them into law... It will take decades to fix the damage he did to our country's image and our citizen's freedom.
His troop surge is a good example of how he's trying to be even handed. It is reasonable to think we need to send a bunch more troops to Iraq in order to beat down the insurgents before we hand control of the country off to the Iraq military/police - but the number he came up with is simply too low to make any real difference. All that 20,000 more troops can do is piss people off and get a few more troops killed each month. It's just a terrible idea. Either send in the extra 50,000+ troops needed to calm the country, or start withdrawing our forces and make sure the Iraq security forces are well funded and trained. Personally I prefer the latter - but this is a case where a balance of the two is simply idiotic.

I absolutely do NOT think President Bush is worried about his legacy more than he is about our military.
He could have saved face a year ago and started pulling our troops out of Iraq after the Democratically held elections in Iraq. At that point in time the original goal was completed. His "legacy" would have been much more assured than standing strong on finishing what we have started.
The man is a Christian and the man is a father, a brother and a son PLUS the man experienced the worst War of all times, the Vietnam War. He knows exactly the peril our men and women in uniform face everyday and I could never believe that every single night that he goes to bed that he isn't seeing the faces of the men and women and family members he has had to face in his mind.
Use your brain. Think about it. You are buying into a flawed sense of reasoning.

I don't think he cares for his legacy at all otherwise he'd do more to get his approvals up. I mean, what do you think his legacy looks like now? It can't be good. Why send more troops? Because we keep re-deploying in Iraq, now we can send forces and keep them there. Do you have a better idea?

i believe that he really thinks it'll help. you have to consider, some people really are good as their word. there really are Iraqi's who are counting on our troops to protect them. i read the best story last night about a man who went to the area tribal chiefs (in Ramaldi, i think), of whom there were about 20, and convinced them to help our troops get the Iraqi police force up and running. all of the chiefs but one, agreed. they spread the word in that area that any targeting of our forces would be considered by these tribes as an attack on themselves. they got the police station built. they recruited plenty of young Iraqi's for the jobs they had. they even gave the man who was the liaison with them, an Arabic name. (he's since been killed. they built another police station and named it in his honor.)
that is the kind of story we don't see on the news.
if he is more worried about how he looks or his legacy or some bullshit like that, i'll lose any shred of respect i have left for the man.

Vanity plays a role in the presidency, for sure. Every president is worried about his legacy and how posterity will judge his tenure in office. George Bush is no different from previous presidents; however, his legacy is based on a war that he cannot win. It is unfortunate that many more must die for a single man's self-image.

Even those that support him, and are in a position to know, say his main concern is his legacy.
They say he's walking around talking about how history will treat him. They say he thinks he's Churchill.
