what you want to do is log into the router it's self. You usually need to have a wire going from the router to a computer to do this. Next you open up internet explorer. Type in 192.168.1.1 this is the default ip address to log into, if in the past the ip address was changed then you need to type that in or reset the router. Next it will probably pop up with the security sign in I beleive the default for linksys is login: linksys, Pass: admin. I am not sure but it is a combination of that. you want to get into the wireless tab once it open up on your computer and set it to on. After you turn it on it is a wood idea to put a wep key on your router besure to write it down.

One thing to check. Back when you were setting up wireless access, did you turn on MAC address filtering? That is, did you limit your wireless connection at the router to only accept certain MAC addresses? (A MAC address is a unique number given to every wireless and wired port on all devices using Ethernet.) If so, you'll need to go into the wireless setup on the router and add the MAC address for the new wireless system. The upside is that is an added measure of security. The downside is every time you add a new laptop, iPod Touch, Tivo DVR, Xbox 360, etc. to the network, you have to remember to update the list. Also, make sure that the IP properties are set so that the wireless with Vista are set to get an IP address and DNS addresses automatically.

the router is for setting up only your wireless network in your home. to access wireless, you need a card that fits into the small slot on your laptop (the left side usually). I use Netgear that I got for 60bucks at Best Buy. It is a bit weak, but generally works great! a few establishments charge to use thier wireless networks, but not many. if you see advertising for "X-Wires", run. they charge. again, very few places charge. the public library will have wireless, so you can always take your laptop there. use the librarie's computers until your time runs out, then use your laptop. wireless is rarely fast, but generally works fine. good luck.

in order to have wireless internet you need a wireless router and a wireless card in your computer/laptop. of course, you can still use the wireless router as a regular router and just run a cable between the router and computer. you have to check and see if your computer is new enough to handle a wireless card. buy that, set it up, and you will be ready to go. good luck!

for mac users...
just click on 'go' and 'connect to server.' then type in the ip address, and u r ready ta go. also...it may want u to type in ur username and password.
for windows users...
right-click on the start button, and click on explore. you will see a 'tree' on the left, showing the start menu folders. just tap the left arrow key on ur keyboard, until u see the menu as in figure 1. then right-click on the 'my network places' icon on the left, and click on, 'map network drive.' type in the server and drive into the box, for example: \\server\local disk_c\ , just like in figure 2, and there ya go!
by da way, about the figure 1 and 2, just go to http://hosted.filefront.com/sergeydgr8/ and download the windows network help. ;-)

www.dlink.com for product manuals and instructions. Very simple, but if you dont' set it up correctly you'll be providing free internet to the world -- and the world doesn't always use Internet resources legally.
