I thought Mell Brooks wrote his speech the way Bush was making offhanded racial remarks.

School vouchers are about re-segregating the schools. After desegregation most rich and middle class southern whites enrolled their children in private schools, so much so that private schools are referred to as "white schools" in the south, while public schools are called "black schools". Whites in the south want vouchers to help pay for the de facto re-segregation, so their strategy is to convince poor blacks in the north to push for vouchers and then if we were to pass federal voucher laws the whites in the south will be able more fully re-segregate the schools. It is an insidious trap that the republicans think America is to stupid to see, but it is only themselves that they are fooling.

Yeah, you're right, poor minority kids should continue to attend their inner city public schools, no matter how horrible they are, while rich white kids get a good education with better-paid teachers. Absolutely. I can understand why you would consider it to be racist. How DARE those poor minority kids get the same opportunity as a rich white kid! I'm just absolutely insulted by the thought.
I hope no one believes that whole thing. It's called sarcasm.
And I think it's racist to NOT want vouchers for kids. That way, at least they have a choice. The problem with public schools is not a lack of funding, it's called APATHY. The teachers don't care, the parents don't care, so the kids don't care. No amount of money can cure widespread apathy.
I think in addition to testing the kids, they should get rid of teacher tenure, especially if the teacher's students have a low pass-rate. They should also extensively test the teachers. On any tests they take before they become a teacher, they should score at least 85%. If they don't, then they don't become a teacher. Period.
But until Congress passes such a law, and the States enforce it, the NCLB act is just going to have to work.

Its not a black white thing-- there are poor white neighborhoods too. Vouchers could be ok but frankly they would apply when sending a child to a private school-- which I'm still ok with. Hey, I pay lots of taxes for local schools, why can't I divert that to chose where I send my kid?
Many public schools allow variences so that you can your kid to another district.
For that matter, why shouldn't a black/hispanic or other eithnic group be allowed to send a smarter kid to a better school.

You really need to educate yourself on the facts...Under a voucher system, parents would in fact be free to take their children out of schools (most of which are among the worst schools in the industrial world) and place them in better ones.Public schools have failed all of America's children.Why shouldn't people who normally can't afford to send their children to better schools be given not only the means but the opportunity to do so...

You obviously have no idea about how school vouchers work. Blacks are the segment of society that support school vouchers the most. However, the democrat party does not support school vouchers so they can keep blacks on the democrat plantation.

Vouchers don't even work.
Every study they've done on voucher programs show that students don't test any better when they are given a voucher to go to a "better" school.
