You also want to check out Italy during the Renaissance (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Renaissance) concentrating on the 14th century when the Renaissance first got going. Artists like Michelangelo were born after Donatello's death and may have been influenced by some of his work. The famous statue The David was completed in 1504 in Florence where Donatello was born. (Leonardo da Vinci was also active after the death of Donatello as well.) Michelangelo was the artist who created the later version of the David which is now on display (I know I have seen it).

Check out the other hyperlinks in the text on Donatello.

Donatello was a famous Florentine artist and sculptor of the early Renaissance. He became well recognized for his creation of the shallow relief style of sculpting, which made the sculpture seem much deeper than it actually was.

His most famous sculpture is that of David.
