when you smell something, you are inctually inhaling small particles of whatever you are smelling. the particles actually flow through your nose and end up in the back of your mouth. the mind can easily perceive that as a specific taste.

Let me put it this way, I very seriously doubt that the smell of Limburger cheeze endears many people to want to try and eat it.
