Interesting question. I know one thing: all the tv and movie producers care about is their pocket books. They do not care about race or gender issues. They do not care about issues at all, they care about what will "sell." The gay issue is in fashion right now, so it is seen as being more of a money-maker. Interracial relationships are much, much more mainstream than they used to be, and so they are kind of vanilla in comparison, based on the volatility of today's culture. Hence the reason you're seeing more of the gay couples in the entertainment media. Controversy actually breeds consumption in the entertainment business.
That said, it is not like there are no interracial stories at all. For example, the movie "Something New" last year was a fairly successful movie, but it didn't exactly smash any records. There are also a few television shows that do feature or have featured interracial couples, though admittedly rarely as the main couple, including "King of Queens," "Grey's Anatomy," "Lost," and "My Name is Earl." So it is not like they are not out there. But it is true that it is in the minority.
In any case, I doubt it has anything to do with anyone's opinion on whether America can "handle it." Obviously fewer of us can handle the gay issue than the interracial issue! All you have to do is read all the gay-bashing in our country to see that. That said, I don't want to play down racism too much. It is obviously still a problem in this country, as much as people try to pretend that it isn't. A black and white couple will still turn some heads in some places in the country. A gay couple, on the other hand, will turn a lot more!

I'm 1000% for gay marriage, gay adoption, gay love and equal gay rights, though I'm 100% straight myself. I don't see how anyone can judge someone for who they love, love has no gender and it's not a choice, it's an attraction that you are born with, you can't help or avoid it and no one has the right to judge anyone on that. NO ONE. I don't see why interacial couples or relationships are even an issue anymore, I don't know anyone who is against it. We live in 2010 now and people should learn to accept it if they haven't already. I have nothing against it. I'm pro-choice. I don't even need to list the many reasons why. Being pro-choice is realistic, it's based on facts, it ignores the biases of religion and personal opinion on it being "murder" and it cuts straight to what is FACT. The scientific side of it, it's scientifically proven that a babies heart doesn't start beating until 12 weeks, at which stage most clinics will not perform abortions. The viable age for a fetus is 26 weeks at the LEAST, meaning that any time a baby is born before then, there is no way it will survive. People should get their facts straight before they choose this. Pro-lifers are hypocrites, you cannot be "pro-life with exceptions" you cannot use religion as an argument, you cannot argue without the facts. Personal opinion and the obvious are two different things entirely. I'm pregnant as well by the way, being pro-choice doesn't necessarily mean I will have an abortion, I'm keeping my baby but I'm happy the option to terminate a pregnancy for whatever reason (and there are hundreds of reasons why) is there.

Interracial couples are a main stay in society. We see it everyday in our real life's. It is basically excepted.
Gay couples are not. With more and more of these couples are seen on the tube (TV) this to will be more excepted in society.
Want to see where society is heading or is at, just pay attention to TV shows....then watch reruns of the past and you can see the difference of todays society and yesterdays society.

Because most people are over the shock of segragation. Seeing an interracial couple isn't news. It's old, most people don't care.
A gay person causes shock, causes people to talk, causes churches to protest, and creates free publicity.

Well, there are more gay and lesbian couples than interracial couples.
And I'm in an interracial marriage (and bisexual) so I notice both.
