By "count the music" do you mean how to tell what time signature it's in?
First of all, if you've been in a band for this long, you're probably fine without knowing. It's always good to want to improve, for sure, but there are tons of famous TALENTED musicians who couldn't read music or explain things like key, they just knew how to play and what felt right.
Second, if you mean the time signature, it's not too hard. I recommend doing two things: first: look for examples of different time signatures, standard and weird, and just see if you can find the beat. Some songs that helped me keep the beat are:
*Simon & Garfunkle "scarborough fair" (3/4)
*Jefferson Airplane "White Rabbit" (2/4)
*Primus "eleven" (11/8)
*Dave Brubek "Take 5" (5/4)
*Radiohead "Subterranean homesick alien" (12/4)

2: There are 3 standard time signatures, and it helps to keep in mind what they are used for.

4/4 - standard and boring. 4 beats per measure. if you just go "one two three four/one two three four" over and over, you'll start to notice that some kind of beat is there every time you're ending. It's hard to notice, since it's the standard and all, but you'll hear it if you try it out on different songs.

3/4 - Waltz beat. this beat is primarily used for waltzs and lullabys. It helps to think of how your feet move in a waltz you move two steps over then you move one foot either back or forward, so the first two of the three are for side to side, the last one tells you when to go forward/back. again, just listen to one of the songs i mentioned up top and go "1-2-3/1-2-3" and you'll pick it up easy.

2/4 - marching beat. this one is 2 beats per measure because it's meant for marches, so basically the beat is "left right left right" If counting along doesn't help, just try marching along.

The weirder time signatures usually are a mix of different signatures, like the song above called 11 is basically "1-2-3/1-2-3/1-2-3/1-2", so it's like it mixes waltz with the march. usually the only time you see this is if people are experimenting. in the case of "take 5", listen to the piano in the background, it sounds like it's going to be 4/4, but right after the 3, it slips in 2 beats, so it's like "1-2-3/1-2" but sort of clumsy and swingy. in the case of songs like "subterranian homesick alien" the 12/4 time is really just a sped up 3/4 time. every 4th time it goes through the 3/4 you hear a more pronounced beat. so it's like a really wacky fast waltz. if you see a signature you don't recognize, just figure out if it could be divided into more familiar signatures and that's probably what's going on.

Anyways, hope that was what you were looking for and not too much, my basic advice is to just count along with songs until you hear that beat that marks a measure. once you get that, you should be able to tap your foot to any song and get it. and if all else fails, assume it's 4/4 and just play along.

Go to your band director privately and ask for some after-school help...seriously. They usually dig doing that. Also, college students who are majoring in music education would be great to help you. I could e-mail you some help, but it'd take a while.

You should see if someone does the same thing as you, that is better than you, and ask them for some tips.
