this sound like you wnat to know what the difference is between sympathy and empathy.

Pity, or sympathy, it usless.

it is just a projection... They say "Oww, what a shame." What they are really saying is, "thank goodness its not me."

Empathy is where you make a constructive attempt at being of assistance.

"better to light a candle than to curse the darkness."
