i'm not trying to start an argument here...
but the reason it's not a sport, is that it doesn't involve competition to deterimine the winner.

Now...i realize a lot of people love professional wrestling, and they might get touchy about people insulting it.

But saying that something isn't a sport shouldn't be taken as an insult.
It's more of an insult to Mr. Webster when people totally disregard the definitions of things.

So that's my question...if you've ever gotten mad because somebody said that pro-wrestling isn't a sport...why is that?

and yes...it does bother me that i'm about to post this in the Sports Section of Yahoo Answers. But, that's the section that most people will come to look for it for some reason.
I'd love to post it under Entertainment, but nobody will see it.

you're exactly the kind of idiot i wanted to avoid...
i never said it wasn't hard...i never said they didn't work their butts off.
but since the outcome is predetermined, it's not a sport....BY DEFINITION

and Chris, the same goes to you, minus the idiot comment and the attitude that i meant to imply because i respect what you said, as it was in a mature manner

Raven,
you say "i do disagree when you say it's not a competition to determine a winner"
but then admit that the outcome is scripted...

that makes no sense at all

Water Boy,

interesting answer...i liked it - entertaining

i hear a lot of people wine about gymnastics and figure skating because judges determine the winner.
but nowhere in any rule of sport does it say that can't happen.

and as for poker and dominos and all of that good stuff on ESPN (the entertainment and sports network)
they're 100% on the entertainment side rather than sports
but it does make me want to jump off of a cliff when people playing poker say that it's a sport

Hey I watch wrestling and I will be the first to stand up and say that it is as fake as a 4 dollar bill. People that get offended are just crazy. There is no sport that has a team of writers to determine an outcome. That's what makes it entertainment.

I like pro wrestling a lot, I've followed it for years, but I know its not a "sport" in the traditional sense.

Then again ... there's a lot of things that kind of blur the line. Gymnastics and figure skating both entail doing feats of strength and agility to impress the judges ... replace "judges" with "fans" and that's pretty much the premise of a wrestling match. Plus stuff like poker and billiards end up on ESPN and other sports channels ... aren't those games, not sports? And if those are games, then what about bowling, or even golf?

If you really want to be picky, you could say the "competition" is proving yourself as an exciting enough performer that you get booked to win matches, hold titles, etc. If you think of the broader definition of "sports" as any physical activity done for competition or entertainment, then you argue that something doesn't have to be a "sport" in the sense of boxing or football to qualify.

Professional wrestling is the performance, management, and marketing of a form of entertainment based on elements of Greco-Roman wrestling, mixed martial arts, and theater.

It is a show, a very athletic show, but it is still a show, it is no more a sport than watching a mime.

Greco-roman wrestling is an actual sport with actual compitition to determin the winner......not selecting the winner baised on who will pack the most seats.

sport /spɔrt, spoʊrt/ Pronunciation Key - Show Spelled Pronunciation[spawrt, spohrt] Pronunciation Key - Show IPA Pronunciation
–noun 1. an activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature, as racing, baseball, tennis, golf, bowling, wrestling, boxing, hunting, fishing, etc.

The skill or prowess will often determin the outcome

It's because people that like "professional" wrestling is probably because they loved it as a child and aren't ready to let it go. I don't think it is a sport because the winner is decided before the actual match. People can try to defend it but that's the truth. Also, people might be offended because they like it better than real sports, so when someone says it's not a real sport, it's as if their favorite thing is being taken away from them.

I love wrestling and your right people ***** flip sometimes but i think i can aswer this calmly lol
well any physical competition is a sport(believe me I have a degree in this) even if it doesnt determine an absolute winner like football or soccer does. The reason they get pissed off is because they feel your disrespecting a certain athletes talent and determination. Its like if someone said "Eli manning sucks as a football player" if you like football you would get offended just because they insulted Eli manning.Any physical activity where there is competition(pre-determined outcome or not)will be considered a sport.

It's a shame that so many people still believe that pro wrestling is for real.
Sure there is real wrestling but it's not the kind that involves "hulk Hogan" type characters.
I've seen many agruments between people about whether or not this "sport" is real, and almost wet myself laughing.
Don't bother trying to argue this with westle-mania fans, you'll only look foolish . Let them believe in their delusion and be happy.
Ignorance is bliss.

Ok look, I think I got a good point here. What is real these days? All movies are fake. Most TV is fake. And yes, SOME pro-wrestling is fake. But how can a Muscle Buster or a Canadian Destroyer...or Batista-Bomb be fake? Seriously those have to hurt. And Michaels's Sweet Chin Music. How can that be fake when you hear it? I think most of its real, but the submissions have to be fake because of the damage just one submission can do. They do plan out who wins, and all of that too. And dont get me wrong, some of it's fake. But I must admit, TNA is much realer than WWE. Just look at the wrestling they do.

it really isn't a sport. in my opinion it is disgusting the way they take the actual sport of wrestling, like olympic college and high school wrestling, and turn it into a joke. the whole thing isn't even about wrestling. its all drama. i actually met kurt angle one day when he was in town. i was talking to him and he said that he was disgusted with the whole pro wrestling thing. the only reason he said he does it was for the money. i find pro wrestling to be a steaming pile of made up balony. i would love to see actual wrestling on tv. not a soap opera.

I think because they are so caught up in the drama. Also because they hear the thuds on the ring floor. It is all a big staged soap opera to me. I tell my sons it is not even real.......compared to boxing. Boxing is real. These guys are really getting the crap kicked outta them. Pro wrestling is just a big show! No one gets hurt unless they do their practiced moves wrong.

I find it offensive because just because the matches are predetermined, doersn't mean it's fake. They go 300 plus days out of the year. there's no six-months off to rest up. Plus it doesn't matter if your sick, injured, etc. You still have to go out there night in and night out and give 110% to make the fans happy. I'd like to see any other sports athelete do what professional wreslters do. i highly doubt they would make it. Let's throw Donovan Mcnabb, and TO in a Hell In A Cell and see what happens. i bet they would never make it.
