Democracy is a concept that works in some countries and not others. History, culture, traditions, economies affect that concept tremendously.
Imposed democracy doesn't work simply because it has not been voted for as you said. It also takes years to have a stable regime or government, provided they're a sovereign country, with their own legal systems, army, health system. Democracy involves all of the above and everyone. But not when 6 different countries are patrolling your streets and telling you you're just a stupid arab who cannot think for yourself let me take your oil and feed you m60 calibers.
Democracy is when YOU want it not when Someone imposes it. Thats why it works in some countries and not others.

Anyone that thinks the Iraqi people want a democracy is just plain crazy. They want a government run by their Religious Clerics.
We did a regime change and found no weapons of mass destruction. Why are we still there?
The average Iraqi just wants us out of his country, so the Iraqis can figure it all out and work it all out. There will be a civil war there for a long time, rather we pull out now or later. They have been fighting for over two thousand years against one another. They do not want a Democracy as near as bad as the neo's and this White House Administration.

Considering what the folks in the West Bank elected when given the chance, your point is well seen. Nevertheless, the idea remains that letting people choose is better than imposing government, if only so that if the government turns pesky, they can then unchoose the nut (as, for example, the citizens in the Phillipines did with Marcos.)
But, yeah, what if they ALL vote to go bomb someone else? Then what?

Democratic nations often don't go to war with each other. I think only two democratic nations in the history of modern nation-states have ever declared war.
Democracies are transparent and offer more stability for people that live there as well as foreign investors.

Did you take a government class in school? They would vote for whatever they want. Democracy gives them control of their own lives (and country) for the first time EVER.

They would vote for the thing you do not understand they want. Democracy. To be free from the fear that one regime that is in control would not decide whether they would live or die, or thrown into prison, or live in oppression.

The democratic process doesn't necessarily guarantee that idiots won't get elected. Just look at the United States for examples. A necessary adjunct to the democratic process is an educated electorate and enough checks and balances so that one branch of government doesn't take over.

Do you understand the alternatives to democracy?
They used to live under a brutal dictator who kept his people poor, hungry, and abused. If you spoke against him, you were tortured and killed along with your family (whether they were guilty or not). He and his sons freely raped women and tortured innocent citizens just for fun.
The people would vote for their leaders just like we do here in America. They would vote on local issues like we do here in America.
