Front wheel - better cornering, normally faster take off, better traction in snow and rain
Rear wheel - better power to ground ratio, faster straight aways, can handle greater weight
it all depends on what you seek

OK in general, front engine-rear wheel is best for pulling (every seen a honda civic pull a boat?) trucks are almost always this way.
However trucks sometimes get stuck in places that cars can go because of the way weight is distrubeted in truck (enter4x4).
4 wheels work best in rough terrain. If you need to pull something over rough terrain with only two wheels use front wheel drive (if the weight of the engine is greater than what you wanna pull, then use rear wheel)

They both have their merits.
Front Wheel Drive (FWD) is more space efficient and you get weight over the driven wheels for more traction. To name a few.
Rear Wheel Drive (RWD) gives better steering feel and better acceleration because of the weight transfer to the rear under acceleration.
I personally like RWD but that is more to do with track work and drifting. FWD is the norm these days on must regular cars and minivans. Sports cars and luxury cars are usually RWD if they are any good. Although All Wheel Drive is creeping in quickly.
There are a million differences but if your not sure what you have then you should not care.

Depends... Front wheel drive is considered safer and better for poor conditions (wet, snow) as you have more control. However rear wheel drive is my preference, I like to be able control the car from the rear and with experience feel that I can control it better (many expert drivers I have spoken to agree with this).
It really comes down to your driving style and skill. New drivers should go with front wheel drive if possible.

depends on what you are doing... are you racing... if you are then generaly you will get more speed out of a rear wheel drive car...
assuming you are not a race car driver...a front wheel drive car will be easier to drive in the snow... when the wheels spin the back end will not be as likely to come around and cause you to spin out...

Front wheel is better in your situation! but well known manufacturers as BMW or Mercedes produce cars only with rear wheel drive!

it depends on what your interest in the car are. most high powered sports cars are rear wheel drive. while economical and small sized sedans are front wheel drive. There are advantages and disadvantages for both.
