A black Mamba

2007-01-24 08:13:02 · answer #1 · answered by hotmoma_37 4 · 0 1

I personally thought it was the seasnake. So I did some searching. I guess no one knows for sure.

This is a quote from the website listed in sources:

"In the end, it's mostly guesswork. Nonetheless, when you do the research and find out what the LD50s of black widow venom and taipan venom actually are, the black widow loses, at least in mice--it takes 0.9 mg of venom per kg of mouse, whereas the inland taipan species (there are two) has a value of 0.03, making it 30 times more potent. The "fierce snake" is probably just a variant name for one of the taipan species, made up by the folks producing the TV show. There is no such snake name in use anywhere in the world. There is a published estimate for the hooked-nose seasnake as having 0.02 mg/kg potency, but other figures for that same species are less potent, so there isn't even agreement as to which of these two snakes has the most deadly venom."

The Inland Taipan...also called the "Fierce Snake" is generally considered to be the most venomous snake in the world.

But, the Golden Lancehead has, drop for drop, the most POWERFUL venom of any land-dwelling snake in the world. There are sea-snakes (banded sea crete, beaked sea snakes) that have more powerful venom than the golden lancehead, but they are not frequuently encountered by people.

EDIT: Don't confuse venomous with dangerous. There have been no known human fatalities from inland taipan bites....ever. Mambas and Fer-de-lances kill hundreds, if not thousands, of people a year. The scary thing is that no-one really KNOWS how many people are killed each year by these guys....most of the deaths due to these snakes go unreported because they happen in undeveloped countries where there is no reliable record keeping when it comes to snake bite statistics.

I don't know about strength of venum, but I understand the Australian snake called the "Brown" is very very dangerous. On the news the other day they were talking about this subject and said what made the Brown so deadly was not just the venum, but that it was very agressive and once it started biting something/one, it would not stop biting until it's quary was dead. Shudder...

lets not forget the American coral snake.the reason you don't hear reports on them is that they have a very small bite radius.they can hold their own in the venom department.
