Oh honey, no! Not at all! I live in a small town in SC and things are pretty quiet there. The schools are nice, the taxes are fairly low, and I wouldn't live anywhere else in the world.
Also, where I live, you are two hours fromt the beach and two hours fromt the mountains. We get the best of both worlds here and it doesn't get real cold either.

I love America - of course I am American!!
I am only going to say that if you truly have a desire to move to America - DO IT!!! Don't let anyone "tell you" what you should/n't do!! Don't let people squash your dreams just cuz it may make them uncomfortable!! (they are trying to use scare tactics with you to prevent you from leaving! I am sure, cuz they will miss you! It isn't like the movies at all!!! It's GREAT - find a great neighborhood/city and you'll have a great new adventure!)
I say this from Experience!!! Not experience of moving to a completely different country divided by an ocean! BUT because TOOOO many years of my life I have let other peoples influences/OPINIONS steer my choices. All it will do in the end is make you miserable!! The "desire" deep within you comes out, every year, a little louder! Until you want to scream!
Cuz, when it comes right down to it - you can come on over -- Give it a whirl! Try it for a few years...and if you find out, that it really isn't everything you "thought" that it was.....you can always "go home." And, if nothing else, you can have the PRIVILEGE of saying that YOU DID IT!! You tried it. And get that "urge" to live here satisfied. No shame in trying and going back. Only shame in not trying!!
Best case scenerio - It could be the BEST thing that you ever did! And you'll love it and make the USA your new home!!
Good luck with your decision! I'm behind you all the way!! (I'm finally going to "plug my ears" and "thank people for their concern" and move about 1200 miles myself!! Go where I really want to be! Here's the Best of 2007 to both of us!! LOL)

Heck no, it's pretty safe for people who choose to stay out of trouble and away from meth and such.
I live in Cali, and there is a fair amount of crime, but nothing significant has happened to me. Also I lived in Seattle, and it was very tame - hardly anything happened there. We are allowed to buy guns and tasers to use for self-defense here. I don't know anyone who has ever been mugged, but I do know people who have had their cars stolen and my car has been broken into before. Sure there are murders and domestic abuse and whatever, but people usually don't just go up to each other on the street and stab random people.
It's a big country, so the question is kindof hard to answer. I will tell you that if you want less crime, move to an area where there are a lot of tourists and/or retired folks. Or cities like Portland, SF and Seattle...seems safer than east coast cities.

I've never been mugged. I've been hit by a car, but that was partially my own fault.
If you aren't going into seedy areas, you probably won't be a victim of crime. I've walked ten blocks in NYC in the middle of the night by myself and had no problems. Maybe if I were a young female I would have, but I don't exactly look like a football player either.
Some cities are worse than others. I've heard bad things about Detroit, and been there and not to keen on it. Most cities aren't like that.
This is pretty much the case wherever you go in the developed world, as long as there isn't like a war or civil war, or really bad race relations, or separatist groups, or something.

that is such crap, don't believe everything you see in the movies. There are bad parts of america and bad people. But those bad parts tend to house most of the bad people, so if you use some common sense just stay out of the ghetto's. Crime in American cities is isolated to select neighborhoods and it's usually a group of a few thousand bad apples that makes life hell in those areas and ruins the reputation. As long as you don't hang out with the wrong people in the wrong places you will be fine.

I bet even if you move to NYC or LA the crime is still not as bad as you see in TV/Movies unless you are in the bad parts. If you move here move to the South West. The people are nice and there is not as much crime. Do you research on whatever city you want to move to and find the good areas to live. I love it here in America.

You can be a victim of crime anywhere you go in the world. For the most part, it's very safe here. We don't have all the crocs you do there...;)
It's a huge country, the size of Australia, just with 12 times the population.
Come see for yourself, we're a friendly lot.

You won't find it much different from Australia. The standard of living is a bit higher, and there is a bit more variety of climate conditions than in Australia, but that's about it. Check with the nearest American embassy or consulate about visa requirements. Not many kangaroos here.
