normal weight gain during pregnancy is as follows
months 1-3 no gain or up to 4 lbs water retention
months 4-9 .8-1.2 lbs each week
total weight gain not to exceed 35 lbs
the thing I would recommend is keeping a food diary
you only need 300 extra calories a day from now till the end of your pregnancy
most of what you are eating should consist of whole grains, fruits and vegetables. you need small portions of protein (60 grams a day) and small amounts of fat.
you should cut out food that is highly processed (that's anything that comes in a box, bag, or can).
drink water instead of juice, soda, or milk (most people do not drink enough)

Becki jean:
According to the Dietary Guidelines for Americans published by the USDA, a pregnant woman needs about 2,300-2,700 calories a day.
the 1800-2000 calories you are recommending is dangerously low unless you ment only during the first trimester when your body requires no additional calories...

oh god i so relate. with my son i gained 20 kilos, or 44 pounds. i went up 5 dress sizes. the good news is that i lost all the weight in 3 months as all i had to do was eat healthy and it literally fell off. i am slim naturally, but was covered in fat!!! this time around i am 14.5 weeks and have not gained a single bit of weight. i am about 130 pounds and haven't budged. the doc says this is due to still loosing fat from the first baby as my son is 5 months old - close i know! however, if u gain 1kg a month or 2.2 pounds per month then that is baby and not fat. in the first 4 months u really should not gain too much, as the more the baby grows the more weight u can gain comfortably without it being fat, usually that is later in the pregnancy. my tips to aoid weight gain is t count calories. this really works for me. a pregnant woman should eat 2000 cals a day - no more. an overweight pregnant woman should eat 1800 cals per day. it is good to keep an eye on what u are putting into your body and when. counting cals is good because u can still have treats. i count in ice cream, lollies and some dinners out. calorie counting just helps u stay in a ball park and watch portions.
all the best.

You should gain 2-4 pounds in the first three months, then a pound a week after that. Everyone is different.
My first pregnancy I gained 22 pounds, my baby was 8lbs, 12 oz.
In my second pregnancy, twins, I gained 40 pounds, they were 7lbs, 5oz & 6lbs, 11oz.
Here is an interesting link.

Try and do some form of exercise everyday, even if it's just going for a walk with your first child.
Enjoy!

i know what you are going thru. my fist daughter i gained so much weight that i was terrified to get pregnant again. i am now 7 months pregnant and have gained 11 lbs.
I would go a couple months and not gain...then in one month I would gain 3 pounds. My doctor said it was normal and that it was most likely the baby having a growth spurt.
this time i made it my goal to drink plenty of water. it really helped keep my eating in line. Also, i keep track of my calories. You only need 200 more calories than you needed when you weren't pregnant to grow a healthy baby.
don't feel like you have to deny yourself, though. just portion control.
3-5lbs at your 4th month sounds fine!

It is normal. For me I lost 5 lbs the first 3 months as do most people, then you should gain a few lbs every month now.
