I'm a kindergarten teacher's assistant and I notice that one student always chooses dark colors in coloring activities. Is this a sign that things may not be right somewhere outside of the classroom?

Hmm. When I was in Kindergarten, I drew a picture of my family in a house that was burning - high flames and everything. It didn't mean I hated my family or I was a pyromaniac. It meant I had just learned to mix red and yellow to make 'fire'. LOL. I remember it distinctly.

In Pre-K, my favorite color was pink. Then I got to first grade, and pink was immediately replaced with black. I wasn't a juvenile goth or anything; I just decided that I preferred that particular color. Don't over-analyze the situation.

I think it is more about what the child draws rather than the color they choose..Ask the school counselor what they think..My daughter loves to paint with black and brown? (why? I have no idea!) But she paints smiling people and rainbows and stuff...So I don't worry about it too much...ss

it depends on the student's mood (sometimes) but it could be an indicator that the child is having some problems, also what he draws is a good indicator about whats effecting him\her...
