That people want to sell a used computer rather than recycle it? It is odd that people think anyone would want a 5-10yr old computer. How can we encourage people to recycle and eliminate the perception of value at the same time?

Old computers have lots of toxic chemicals like lead and mercury and units that are 3 or more years old have little or no reuse potential. There are companies like SoCal Computer Recyclers in California (www.socalrecyclers.com) that recycle obsolete computers and refurbish newer ones for redistribution. It's a great idea - why don't more people know or want to recycle?

???

Selling to someone who will use it (rather than dismantle it and melt down its parts, thus using resources and creating pollution) is the ultimate "recycling."

If the buyer doesn't mind the oldness, what's the problem? If they can't afford a new computer, they are better off having an old one than none at all.

It doesn't pollute or waste.

What's it to you?

What's the advantage in encouraging recycling over continued use?

If people could make more money recycling or educated better about the values of recycling then maybe less selling would occur.
