You will do well. The dollar is very weak right now (the pound is worth approx double the dollar, although it fluctuates. Not good for me when I travel to the UK at all). I would bring about 200-400 pounds of fun money. You can always charge the shopping or withdraw more when you are there if you want to splurge. You'll probably have plenty of cash to spare when the trip is done, but it's best to be prepared for any unexpected adventures and purchases. If you avoid big ticket items like stage shows (usually not worth it unless you see the small ones like Stomp, Blue Man Group or Avenue Q)and stick to enjoying the real city, you won't have to spend too much at all. The shopping is amazing. Have fun, New York is my fave city. It's back to being cold now though, so bundle up!
***If you are a girl, bring more money. NY is a wonderful shopping city, and the shoes alone will blow your budget because you will buy so much! Also - buy an empty bag to bring back full of your scores. Check out the Girlshop store, and don't miss Soho.

The exchange rate (the last time I have checked it) was £1:$1.8
New York city centre is kind of expensive, like London. If you are planning to buy from the outlets or shops away from the Manhattan Island, then I recommend £1000 max (but I spend a lot abroad anyway)

You can take as much as you want. When over there spend like mad,(cos it's dirt cheap!). But anything you by, like clothes watches rings etc... put them on, when you return to the UK, because there is a a maximum, you can bring back of £450, before paying any duty.
If customs stop you tell them you took £600 in cash, and show them receipt of about £400. Happy Shopping!!!!!

between 5 and 8 hundred quid should see you nicely
but you could EASILY get by on 2 or 3
you could havce a good time in NY with about 60 quid a day, easy. Just don't go to any broadway shows they're extortionate.

Just don't take it all in cash -muggers and robbers etc. It's about $2 = £1 . I would have thought £400 is enough - but i'm no fan of shopping!
I'd check out lonely planet guide to New york (i'm sure there is one) and possibly one at your local library.

£1000 if you can afford it, i went with £600 for 4 days, i had a brilliant time in a fantastic place, but i wish i had a bit more money, but that was my limit. and make sure you try Sal's little Italy in Broome st, NY
it is a very good Italian restaurant and reasonable prices.
