In Europe and other countries, outside of the U.S., Managing Director (MD) is often used to refer to the lead executive in the region or business unit. In the US, there is usually one corporate or top CEO, but sometimes there is a President or CEO of the region or business unit that might be the same as the MD.

The lesson here, is that you can't really judge what someone really does by their title, you need a description of their roles and responsibilities.

An MD is a Medical doctor. It is a degree, a PHD in Medicine.
A CEO is an appointment. You appoint yourself or someone as CEO of a company. You could own a toilet bowl cleaning company and make yourself a CEO of Toilets America. Be careful not to put too much on the name followed by CEO it could be anyone. MD on the other hand MUST be a true Doctor with a degree.

Hope this helped.

MD is an earned academic degree usually with a license to practice medicine. Some are self-employed while others work for a salary paid by an employer.

CEO is a business title on an organization chart with no implication of qualification or training.
