I just got and already read messenger, by Lois Lowry. If you've read The Giver, you know her work. I really enjoyed this one, probably better than the other two in this group (the second is Gathering Blue.)

I tried to read Eragon, but got stuck. I also purchased Twilight, by Stephanie Meyer, and that was has been good so far.

Another more recent book I've read is Kite Runner, a novel about Afghanistan culture before and after the Taliban arrived.

Depends on what kind of books you like. I have recently read 2 books by Steve Berry: The Romanov Prophecy and The Amber Room. Both were excellent. It only took me 2 days to read each one because I couldn't put them down. He has 2 other books out that I plan to read. Also if you have never read the book The Lovely Bones its great I have read it twice and loved it both times.

to the person who said hitchhikers giude, excellent choice.

it's hard to reccomend a book if i don't know what you like to read, some peopel have very specific tastes. i really like anything by richard matheson (what dreams may come WILL make you cry, ignore that movie with robin williams) i recently reread life of Pi, although i'm completely athiestic, i found the religious views very interesting.

the books stiff and spook by mary roach are pretty interesting. stiff is about all the possiblities that can happend to your BODY after you die (research and such) but written with a sense of humor. give it a whirl if you can stomach it. spook is a study of ghosts, can they be real and all that. again in a humorous way.

if you want something silly go for Tom Robbins books.

sappy but impossible to put down, then go for anything by Jodi Picoult.
