my desktop/ web pages / everything is now appearing as if its on its side ie, the bottom of the desktop is now on the left hand side of the monitor, I need to put the appearence back to normal.

right click on the taskbar and make sure 'lock taskbar' is unchecked. Then drag it back to the bottom. After it's back make sure you right click and 'lock taskbar' so it doesn't happen again.

Ah I know what you did. This happened to me. I think you dragged the toolbar (the thing with start-allthewindows-clock-etc) and moved to the side. It is hard to get back BUT you can drag it back. Just try 5 or 6 times and you'll get it.

right-click on your desktop. click properties. mess around with the settings. is it just your task bar(i.e. start menu and programs opened) that is on the side? if so then your task bar got moved. you can move it back down. or right-click on it and play around with those settings. hope this helps!
